9002-MS - Caustic Etchant for Aluminum
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION-A white, dustless powder that will readily dissolve in cold water. Resulting solution will etch aluminum parts uniformly to a satin finish. Surfactants and chelating agents incorporated in this single product will avoid any coagulation and solidification of precipitates, which collect at tank bottom. Occasional removal of this sludge will render a dump free tank Bath concentration should be checked regularly and maintained by addition of fresh 9002-MS. (See Bath Control)
METHOD OF APPLICATION- Add eight ounces (1/2 pound) of 9002-MS to every gallon of cool water in tank with agitation. Mix for a few minutes and heat tank to 120-150 degrees Fahrenheit. Immerse parts for 3 to 5 minutes, take out; for deep scratches, a few more minutes may be necessary. Rinse well and then proceed to desmut in Deoxidizer Tank (Tabco 9004).
SAFETY- This material contains caustic. Protection of eyes, skin and clothing against powder form and especially, hot liquid form, is required. Vapors should be amply vented out of workshop area.
ETCH RATE- The etch rate can vary with bath concentration, temperature and type of alloy. However, the following parameters can be used for a guide:
Conc. = 6-8 oz/gallon
Temp. = 120-150 Degrees Fahrenheit
Alloy = 2024-7075 bare aluminum
Etch Rate = 0.2-0.3 mils/minute
